Many parents are told MiraLAX is the go to solution for childhood constipation.
What many families do not realize is that MiraLAX, which contains polyethylene glycol 3350, is often prescribed “off label” for children. This means it has not received FDA approval for use in patients under 17 years old.
Some parents also report noticing unexpected changes after their child begins taking it, including mood swings, irritability, anxiety, or behavior that feels out of character. One reason this may occur is because the gut and brain are closely connected through what scientists call the gut brain axis. Changes in the digestive system, gut bacteria, and fluid balance in the intestines can influence signals sent to the brain that affect mood and behavior.
MiraLAX works through osmosis. It pulls water into the intestines to soften stool and create a bowel movement. While this may provide temporary relief, it does not correct why constipation may be happening in the first place.
Digestion is regulated by the nervous system. When the body is stuck in a stress response, the digestive system can slow down and normal bowel function can become difficult. This same stress response can also impact mood, behavior, sleep, and emotional regulation.

If it were just allergens like pollen that cause allergies, then everyone would have reactions… so instead, let’s find the true root cause of this cycle. When the nervous system is overstressed and imbalanced, it then shifts into what’s called subluxation and sympathetic dominance. This leads to an overactive immune response to allergens like pollen. Sympathetic dominance and subluxation not only leave the body in a pro-imflammatory and overly “sensitive” state, but it limits the “drainage or plumbing” of the sinuses, lymphatics, and respiratory system overall.

Releasing a tie changes structure, but feeding, breathing, and regulation are neurological and whole-body processes. Without support, some babies may struggle to fully integrate the change.
Care beyond the release itself matters. Here are the side effects of releasing ties without chiropractic adjustments:
1️⃣ Increased tension or guarding
After a release, some babies compensate by tightening other areas of the body — especially the neck, jaw, shoulders, or pelvis — making it harder to relax and feed comfortably.
2️⃣ Feeding challenges that persist
Even with a “successful” release, latch issues, clicking, reflux, or fatigue can continue if the nervous system hasn’t learned how to coordinate the new movement.
3️⃣ Heightened stress response
A release is a big sensory experience. Without nervous system support, some babies may show increased fussiness, startle responses, or difficulty settling and sleeping.
4️⃣ Oral aversion or resistance
Resistance to stretches, latching, or oral work isn’t behavioral — it’s often a protective nervous system response when the body feels overwhelmed.
5️⃣ Compensation instead of coordination
The tongue may have more range, but true feeding requires coordination between the tongue, jaw, neck, diaphragm, and breath — not just mobility.
6️⃣ Incomplete functional improvement
Sometimes anatomy looks improved, but parents still notice feeding stress, reflux, digestive and sleep struggles, or slow progress because function and regulation haven’t fully caught up.

Christmas is exciting, but for many kids it is also overwhelming!
More stimulation, more schedule changes, less sleep, and more exposure to germs can push a child’s nervous system into stress mode. When that happens, big emotions, poor sleep, behavioral struggles, and frequent sickness often follow. The holidays do not cause these challenges, they actually just reveal how well a child’s nervous system is able to adapt.
